Value for money. The only consistent
way of making a profit when betting is to obtain value. This is the reason why, long term,
it is not possible to make a profit on Roulette, for example.The 'price' on offer for any
bet or combination in Roulette is less than the actual mathematical odds, consequently
long term playing this game will result in a loss. In horse racing it is possible to
identify a bet as being good value, a better indicator though is the overround
for the race, this is the theoretical sum total that needs to be placed on the runners to
guarantee a return of 100. Typically a high class small field of, say, 6 runners will give
an overround of about 108% meaning that it would be necessary to place 108 (pounds) on the
race to 'win' 100 back, the overround gives the bookmaker his profit. A large handicap on
the other hand will carry an overround of somewhere in the region of 140%. |

Calculating overround. The overround
is the theoretical total amount needed to be placed on runners in a race to guarantee 100
units (pounds/euros/nuts) back. For each price offered such a x-y is to multiply y by 100
and divide this by (x + y). Here is a simple example e.g. 2-1 is 100/3 = 33. A more
complex example is 11-4 .. 400/15 = 27. Do this for all runners and add the values to give
the overround. For digital odds simply divide 100 by the digital odds,
for example 2.8 is 100/2.8 = 36. The overround for a race indicates how much built-in
profit the bookie is making on the race, big field handicaps are high in overround,
perhaps 140-150% whereas a 3 runner listed race will be around 105%. |
