Spread Betting - General |
|
Spread Betting explained. Spread
betting can often seem a complicated subject, however viewed simply it is simple to
understand. The basis of all spread bets is a value derived from a sporting activity, the
value can be real (such as the total goals scored in a football game) or derived (such as
index betting on a horse race). In all cases the result is a performance related figure.
The spread betting company decides, before the event, their estimation of the likely
result, they then offer two values, one just below and the other just above this figure
and publish them as their offer. An example best explains this, assuming a football match
between Arsenal and Fulham. The firm estimates that the total number of goals will be 2.1
(yes we know that it's not possible to score 0.1 of a goal). The firm may publish total
goals for this match as 2-2.2. If the punter believes that the total goals is going to be
less than 2 then he sells at 2, otherwise he buys at 2.2. If the result of the match is
one goal, the seller makes (2-1 = 1) times his stake whereas the buyer loses (2.2-1=1.2)
times his stake. From this it's clear that the difference between the two offered values
(the spread)give the firm their profit. Firms such as BetHiLo offer spread free betting daily, i.e no built in profit to the
firm |
